For Good

A wonderful woman first introduced me to this song, but it's playing on "replay" in my brain today as I prepare for tomorrow's memorial service.

As I try to find the right words to honour such a unique and wonderful man, I know that his life made the world a better place - not only for me - but for everyone who knew him. Of course there were years when I didn't see him so often, but in the past ten years or so since I've been at our Little Church on the Corner I've come to know him and love him all over again.

It's true that to love someone, anyone, is a risk. The risk is that at some point there will be a day like tomorrow, when life and love are celebrated in the midst of deep grief. But, you know, for my money it's all worth it. Or, as Khalil Gibran put it:

When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.
Khalil Gibran

Anyway, here's the song that's playing in my brain today: It's from a song in the musical "Wicked" called "For Good". Here are some of the lyrics:

I've heard it said
That people come into our lives for a reason
Bringing something we must learn
And we are led
To those who help us most to grow
If we let them
And we help them in return
Well, I don't know if I believe that's true
But I know I'm who I am today
Because I knew you...

Like a comet pulled from orbit
As it passes a sun
Like a stream that meets a boulder
Halfway through the wood
Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
But because I knew you
I have been changed for good
